FigureLabs Glossary

Welcome to the FigureLabs Glossary. This guide explains the key concepts and features to help you go from a rough idea to a publication-ready scientific figure smoothly.

Core AI Concepts

Prompt
  • Definition: The text instruction you give the AI to describe what you want to generate or edit.
  • In FigureLabs: Treat your prompt like a brief to a human illustrator. The more specific you are about structures, colors, and layout (e.g., "3D core-shell nanoparticle, blue core, transparent shell"), the better the result.
Prompt Expansion
  • Definition: An AI feature that automatically enriches a short or vague instruction into a highly detailed prompt.
  • In FigureLabs: You don't need to be a "prompt engineer." Just paste your paper's abstract, and our system will generate the optimal prompt for scientific illustration.
Context Window
  • Definition: The amount of previous conversation the AI can remember during a single session.
  • In FigureLabs: Our generation process is conversational. Because the AI remembers your previous steps, you can simply type "change the red particles to blue" to iterate on your current figure without restating everything.
Hallucination
  • Definition: When an AI generates output that is factually incorrect or logically unsupported.
  • In FigureLabs: Scientific accuracy is critical. If the AI draws an extra chemical bond or a wrong cell structure, you don't have to start over. Just use the Region Redraw tool to fix that specific error.

Generation Modes

Text-to-Figure
  • Definition: Generating a figure entirely from a text description.
  • In FigureLabs: Best used when you have a clear concept in mind but no existing visual assets to start with.
Sketch-to-Figure
  • Definition: Transforming a hand-drawn image into a digital illustration.
  • In FigureLabs: Snap a photo of your lab whiteboard or a rough paper sketch, upload it, and let the AI render it into a polished, 3D, or 2D scientific figure.
Reference-to-Figure
  • Definition: Using an existing image as a stylistic template for a new generation.
  • In FigureLabs: Upload a figure from a target journal to mimic its specific color palette, style, and structural layout for your own research topic.
Image Enhancer
  • Definition: Uploading a blurry or incomplete image to restore it to high definition and recover lost details.
  • In FigureLabs: Unlike Upscale which only increases pixel density, the Enhancer uses AI to intelligently reconstruct missing visual information, making old or low-quality reference figures crisp and clear.

AI Editing Tools

Region Redraw
  • Definition: Selecting a specific area of an image to regenerate while keeping the rest intact.
  • In FigureLabs: The ultimate tool for fine-tuning. If 90% of the figure is perfect, just lasso the incorrect 10% and type a new prompt to fix it.
Text Edit
  • Definition: Modifying text elements within an AI-generated image.
  • In FigureLabs: No need to export to Photoshop. Click on any recognized text label in your generated figure to correct typos or update scientific terms directly.
Upscale
  • Definition: Enhancing the resolution of an image without losing quality.
  • In FigureLabs: Boost your figure's resolution up to 8K (approx. 1200 DPI) to meet the strict clarity requirements of journals like Nature or Science.

Formats & Export

Vectorization / Vector Graphics
  • Definition: Images made of mathematical paths rather than pixels, meaning they can be scaled infinitely without blurring.
  • In FigureLabs: Crucial for academic publishing. You can export your generated figures as SVG or editable PPTX for final layout adjustments in Adobe Illustrator, BioRender, or PowerPoint.
Vector Canvas
  • Definition: An integrated web-based workspace for editing.
  • In FigureLabs: After vectorizing your image, you can drag, drop, and tweak individual elements directly in your browser before downloading.
Publication Authorization Certificate
  • Definition: A legal document proving your right to use the image.
  • In FigureLabs: Download this unique PDF certificate upon export to easily pass the copyright and compliance checks during journal submission.

Credits & Billing

Credits
  • Definition: The digital currency used to perform tasks on the platform.
  • In FigureLabs: You are charged per action, not per word. For example, generating a figure costs 50 credits, while exporting a complex Vector SVG costs 150 credits.
Daily Refresh Credits
  • Definition: A set amount of free credits granted to active users every day.
  • In FigureLabs: Log in daily to claim them (50 for Free, 100 for Paid plans). These expire at the end of the day and do not roll over.
Credit Rollover
  • Definition: Moving unused credits from one billing cycle to the next.
  • In FigureLabs: Available for Team and Business plans, allowing up to 20% of your unused monthly credits to be saved for the next month.
